Let’s get started on this Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality Review.
What is Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality?
If Adult Swim’s April Fool’s Day showing of Season 3 Episode 1 wasn’t enough to satiate your thirst for more this Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality review might help to calm your nerves a bit. This “schwifty” virtual reality experience is both a great game and a great fan service experience.
Who Makes Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality?
Owlchemy labs, of Job Simulator and Accounting fame, created this game. If you have experience in Job Simulator, then playing Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality will come naturally. If you do not, then you should be able to pick it up quickly. Rick has no shame in yelling at you to do stuff in this Rick and Morty VR game.
Which VR Headsets Can You Play Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality On?
You can play Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality on Steam VR, Playstation VR, and Oculus Rift.
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality Review Gameplay
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality supports room-scale movement alongside a teleportation system. Portals are a big part of the Rick and Morty Universe. You actually have to walk through portals in this game to move around. There are 3 workspaces in the garage that you need to teleport to.
There’s also a unique version of Mr. Meseeks – called Mr. Youseeks that you can throw to places that you cannot access yourself. Mr. Youseeks mirrors your own movements in the distance to allow you to interact with distant items. You can actually throw items to yourself or between Youseeks before they get to you.
There are several types of game modes that present themselves as the story progresses. You mostly listen to Rick as part of the linear storyline. You then move on to simple puzzle solving in order to follow his orders. Some of the puzzles involve several steps that require different methods to complete. The main puzzle might require you to collect pieces to complete it, but earning those pieces can challenge you.
Batteries are an ongoing puzzle item. Once you find some batteries, they may not be charged and will require a fast-paced mini-game to get them recharged. There is a small, medium, and a large battery that you can recharge. The bigger the battery, the more difficult it is to recharge it.
There is also a machine in Rick’s garage that allows you to combine objects to make new objects to help solve other puzzles. The trick here is knowing which objects to combine. You have the ability to create so many objects that the floor of the garage may look like a junk pile by the end of the game.
You can also re-experience the VR knock-off game-within-the-game, Troy, and make different choices in his life. One goal is to live past 100 years old. There are also hidden cassettes that you need to find. Some are out in the open, others are “out of reach.” I played through this whole game twice over.
Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality Controls
I used a two-sensor setup with my Oculus Rift. I did experience occasional tracking glitches when I was facing away from the sensors. This solidified my decision to order the third sensor from the Oculus store so that I can get coverage behind me. The Touch controls are great, and everything feels natural.
Items that you can grab are highlighted in blue. Items on the ground actually raise themselves a little higher, to help the player pick them up. I was able to throw items to myself and catch them. All items are interactive: Bottles and cans open, Glass object break, liquid pours out, and walking through portals transport you. Movement and teleportation feel very natural. I was able to easily spend a couple of hours playing Rick and Mort: Virtual Rick-ality review without a break.
Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality Graphics
The graphics are definitely a step up from Job Simulator and Accounting. The graphics in those games were great for their worlds, but there may be a little difficulty in translating a 2D cartoon into a 3D virtual world.
Owlchemy labs did a great job of recreating the look and feel of Rick and Morty. I really felt like I was in the Smith house as soon as I entered the game. When I got to the garage and met with Rick and Morty for the first time, I felt a little star-struck as a couple of my favorite characters were (virtually) standing in front of me. The first thing I did was try to smack both Rick and Morty. They didn’t care one bit, as they were explaining my place in the world.
Who Will Enjoy Playing Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality?
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is not rated, but I imagine it would be T for Teen. There are fantasy themes as well as mild blood, suggestive themes, alcohol, and tobacco. A slightly older audience who remembers classic point-and-click adventures will enjoy Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. Anyone who enjoys adventure games and of course the TV show Rick and Morty.
What Games are similar to Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality?
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is similar to old-school classic point-and-click adventures like Maniac Mansion or Secret of Monkey Island. Similar VR Games would be Sam and Max, Madrid Noir, and Flow Weaver.
How long is Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality?
This is a rather short experience. It can be completed in about 4 hours. This game is short and sweet but is packed to the brim with so many Easter eggs and fan service. The second time play-through was easier, but I saw so many things that I didn’t catch the first time. There is definitely a lot of replayability in this short Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality review.
Conclusion for Rick and Morty Virtual Rick-ality VR review
You’ll want to play a lot, as there are many unlockables and hidden surprises. There’s a convenient scoreboard to help tally what you have found. There are also many objects in Rick’s garage that aren’t only there because they’re in the show, but they may actually help you out. You really feel like part of the show because the characters are speaking directly to you and the game is fully voice-acted.
I’m still searching for that Szechuan sauce though.
