One of the Craziest Fun VR games yet

Let’s get started on this Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space Review.

What is Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space?

Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space is an FPS / tower defense game. That might seem odd but VR makes this combo possible. It also has some of the craziest situations, humor, and characters.

Attack neon punk enemies, crazy robot chickens, huge T-rexs, sharks, and more with an equally crazy variety of weapons – like a hot sauce tower, fireworks, snowman freeze, and pinata bombs!

Who Makes Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space?

Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space is made by Teravision Games. They are a developer from Colombia with 14 years of game dev experience. Captain Toonhead is their first VR game.

Which VR Headsets is Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space On?

You can play Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space on Steam VR and Oculus Quest 2.

At the time of review, Virtual Desktop would not play this game correctly but Airlink would.

Captain Toonhead Tutorial

You start the game with an interactive short experience that explains who the evil villain is – Voorhees.  You play Elliot Salazar who is a janitor for the World Treaty for Freedom (WTF). Then the tutorial starts.

Everything in the Tutorial is pretty straightforward and gets you familiar with moving and using the super-amazing hammers you invented.

After an unfortunate accident, it seems you are now earth’s only hope against Voorhees. With your trusty sarcastic and not very supportive robot pal -Janine – you head to the planet to find out it is inhabited by really cute cubes! Because you wear a TV on your head, these cubes look to you as their new god and you must save them. It seems Voorhees is using these cubes for their energy and destroying them. Save the cubes!

Yeah, it is strange but it all works somehow.

Captain Toonhead Gameplay

The point of the game is to protect the cubes you see at the start of the level from being taken by the bad guys Voorhees sends in waves at you.

You do this by building towers (or toonrets as the game calls them) in a typical tower defense style. You also have the ability to switch to your pistols and shoot these guys yourself FPS style. As the guys explode some will turn into scrap that you grab with your hammers to make more defense or offense. There will be several waves of this. If you make it through all the waves with a cube alive, you win that round and go back to the ship with the saved cubes in your Pizza rocket.

There is no movement in this game per se. Once you place a tower you can teleport to that location. There is zero in-game turning. If you want to turn you need to turn in real life. This can be a little weird at times.

I sometimes found it hard to select the turret location that I wanted and more than once I placed one on the wrong spot.  It can be hard to see the location that you want to place a turret on so the game offers a “birds-eye view” mode. This causes you to float up and let you see most of the map. You can also use this mode to shoot the bad guys way in the distance and hope your shots get lucky.

Even using this mode I still placed turrets incorrectly quite a few times. Sometimes the tower building location are quite close together and you think you are on the right one, only to find after it is built you are not. It wasn’t game-breaking by any stretch but something to take note of.

After each win, you go back to the ship and get various new towers, abilities, and upgrades to your equipment.

As the game progress, the size of the map gets way more intense and complex. There will usually be more than one path and more than one entrance.

Boy is this game fun! The crazy cartoon world gets very intense as you desperately try and shoot that massive health T-rex down before he reaches the exit with your cubes.

Strategy against the bad guys

This game definitely requires some strategic thinking. I needed to restart levels quite a few times because it was clear that I placed a tower that wasn’t going to help me like I thought it was.

When you start the game you will actually need to pull the trigger repeatedly to fire rapidly and that will tire you out pretty quickly. As you progress through auto fire unlock. Now the gun will jam if you shoot too much and require you to shake the controllers to get them working again. This is worth mentioning because I found the manually rapid shooting in that first level almost unbearable. Worry not, it will unlock for you in a few levels.

The FPS elements of the game mix nicely with the Tower portions, but don’t be fooled you will need to do both in the game in order to keep advancing.

Who Will Enjoy Playing Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space?

Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space is rated E for Everyone. There is mild fantasy violence but no blood, guts, or gore. It has a very heavy cartoon theme and feel. It is great for those who like tower defense games. Younger players can enjoy this too. Anyone looking for a game with high replayability. (You want to get perfect all on the cubes rescued right?)

What Games are similar to Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space?

Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space has very addictive gameplay that is heavy on the cartoon vibe. A non-VR game that easily comes to mind is Plants Vs Zombies.  Similar VR games would be Sam and Max, Spacefolk City, and Rainbow Reactor Fusion VR.

How long is Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space?

There are at roughly 6 – 8 hours of gameplay in Captain Toonhead. Each level is very easy to lose a cube and in order to get all the best upgrades, you need to get each cube rescued. One level averages about a half-hour of playtime and there are 12 different levels. As you progress they get quite challenging. You will have to play those levels many times I imagine.

Can you play Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space Sitting Down?

Yes! Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space can be played sitting down. In fact, sitting works quite well for this title.  You can also play it standing. You do not need a large play space or room movement.

Does Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space cause motion sickness?

Captain Toonhead uses a kind of teleportation movement only.  You can’t really move in-game only teleport to where you have placed a tower or fly up to birds-eye view. There is no turning and very little chance of motion sickness because of this.

Captain Toonhead Vs the Punks From Outer Space should not cause any motion sickness issues.
